The heat is arriving early it seems this year, but the dogs at the shelter are all well taken care of by their human helpers. We have an air conditioning unit in the isolation room and one in the puppy room to help cool those areas down and fans scattered throughout other areas. There aren’t any puppies in the puppy room currently, but there are adult dogs that certainly appreciate the extra cooling! Don’t forget about the safety of your own dogs. Several short nosed breeds have difficulty breathing in these hot temperatures; at the shelter, we make sure those ones have access to the a/c rooms. We also shorten walk times and yard times for their well being.
Covid-19 has really affected the shelter in many ways these past few months. On the down side, we had to cancel two big fundraisers, our annual pancake breakfast and what would have been our 7th annual Putts For Mutts Golf Tournament. The shelter has also closed the doors to visitors, except by approved appointment, and our weekly transports of dogs from overcrowded shelters to NCCR often could not be arranged. BUT, on the plus side, adoptions soared as people were home all the time to help welcome a new four legged companion into their home! The volunteers were often commenting on how empty the shelter seemed as dogs seemed to leave daily for new homes and new lives. The list of available dogs on the website was changing so fast! http://www.nsofttech.com/available-pets/ If you were one of those people who have adopted in the past few months we hope this time with your new friend has been fun, eye opening and just the start of a life long bond for you.
Luckily for the shelter, NY has eased their restrictions on certain events and that allows us to once again have our Annual Dog-Gone Good Yard Sale! If you’ve been to it before, you know what kind of bargains there are to be had. We pack the learning center, yards and at least two big tents full of kitchenware, sporting goods, furniture, jewelry, antiques, toys, holiday items, linens, lawn and garden equipment, lamps, knickknacks, and many other items.
Your support helps some of the current dogs like Cassie Marie, Phoebe and Miley Girl pictured below.
We need to make this a super successful fundraiser since we weren’t able to hold our other events these past few months. Have you been decluttering your home, garage or barn these past few months? Unfortunately we can’t take books, clothes, mattresses, tvs, electronics, car seats, cribs or computers, but if you have some other good, clean, saleable items we are happy to take them off your hands to turn them into money for the dogs! We are accepting donations daily from 1-3pm through July 20th at the Learning Center at the shelter. We do require you to be masked for the benefit of the volunteers who will help you unload items.
Clear some space at your home, then mark your calendars and come back for the sale on July 24th and 25th from 9am-4pm to buy things to fill those empty spaces back up. We will be requiring masks at the sale and will be having social distancing requirements too, so please be patient as we work our way through all of this; remember, every penny goes to help take care of all the dogs and puppies that pass through our doors. We hope to see you there!
Stay safe and healthy and thank you!
